History of Ludlow
Ludlow is a city in Cumberland County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 8,383 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County.
Ludlow was established in 1883 as a result of the merger of two earlier towns,Davisville and Kenova. The new town was named for Davisville’s founder, George W. Ludlow.
Ludlow was originally settled by farmers in the mid19th century. The town’s economy was based on agriculture and coal mining. The first coal mine in Ludlow opened in 1884.
In the early 20th century, Ludlow became a popular resort destination for wealthy streetcar suburbanites from Cincinnati, Ohio. The town was known for its large number of Victorianstyle homes.
The Ludlow Massacre occurred on April 20, 1914, when a group of striking miners and their families were attacked by the Kentucky National Guard. The incident resulted in the deaths of 19 people, including 11 children.
The town’s economy declined after the massacre, and many of the Victorian homes were converted into rooming houses or apartments. The population also declined, falling to just over 4,000 by the 1960s.
Ludlow began to rebound in the late 20th century. The town’s historic downtown area was revitalized, and new businesses and restaurants opened. The population began to grow again, reaching 8,383 by 2010.
