History of Los Alamos
Los Alamos is located in the Pajarito Plateau between White Rock Canyon and total drive. It is approximately 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe. The city was established in 1942 as a secret site for the Manhattan Project. The project’s purpose was to develop the atomic bomb. The city is named after the Spanish word for “poplar trees.”
The original Los Alamos Ranch School was founded in 1917 by an educationalist couple, Ashley and DorothyWhitney. The school ran for 20 years and educated boys from wealthy families from the East Coast. In 1937, the ranch was bought by a philanthropist, Belle Wilson Spencer. The new owner allowed the school to keep operating, but she also turned the property into a guest ranch, which drew scientists and other intellectuals to the area.
In 1942, the federal government chose Los Alamos as the site for the Manhattan Project.
