History of Longridge
Longridge is a town in Lancashire, England. The population of Longridge was 5,325 at the 2011 census.
The name Longridge may derive from the Old English langridge, meaning “long ridge”. Another possible derivation is from the Celtic words longrigg, meaning “shipridge”, in reference to the town’s hilltop position overlooking the River Ribble.
The town is situated on the main A65 road between Preston and Bradford, and is close to the M6 motorway. It is twinned with the French town of Plogonnec.
Longridge fell under Viking control after the Battle of Maldon in 991. It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Lonrig.
By the 13th century, Longridge had become an important market town, with weekly markets being held. These were discontinued in the 18th century, but were resurrected in the 21st century.
In 1651, during the Civil War, the town was the site of a battle between the Parliamentarian army and Scottish Royalists. The Royalists were defeated, and the town was sacked by the Parliamentarians.
The Industrial Revolution reached Longridge in the early 19th century, with the opening of the Leeds and Lancaster Canal in 1816, and the construction of the Preston and Longridge Railway in 1849. These developments brought new industries to the town, including limestone quarrying and textile manufacture.
The 20th century saw further economic decline, with the closure of the railway line in 1930 and the limestone quarries in the 1960s. However, the 21st century has seen a revival in the town’s fortunes, with the opening of a new railway station in 2004 and the regeneration of the canal area.
