History of Longbenton
Longbenton is a town in North Tyneside, England. It is situated about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne, and is separated from the urban area of Newcastle by the Town Moor. It is in the Tyne and Wear metropolitan borough. It had a population of 16,056 at the 2001 census.
The history of Longbenton begins with the granting of land to the monks of Lindisfarne by Saint Cuthbert in 635 AD. The land, which included the area now known as Longbenton, was used by the monks to build a grange, or farm. The grange was a selfsufficient community, and the monks who lived there were responsible for its daytoday running.
The grange was attacked by the Vikings in 867 AD, and was abandoned by the monks soon afterwards. The land was then granted to the earls of Northumbria, and it is thought that Longbenton village was founded around this time.
The village grew slowly over the centuries, and by the time of the Norman Conquest it was a small settlement of around 30 families. After the Conquest, Longbenton came under the control of the de Vaux family, and remained under their control for the next 300 years.
The de Vaux family built a manor house in Longbenton, and the village grew up around it. The manor house was rebuilt several times over the centuries, and the last rebuilding was carried out in 1768.
During the 18th century, Longbenton was a prosperous farming village, and the de Vaux family were one of the richest families in North Tyneside. However, the village began to decline in the 19th century, when many of the farms in the area were sold off.
The de Vaux family also began to sell off their lands in Longbenton, and by the beginning of the 20th century, they no longer owned any land in the village. The last member of the family to live in the village was Sir John de Vaux, who died in 1932.
