History of Long Branch
The history of Long Branch begins in the 18th century, when the area was first settled by European colonists. The colony of Long Branch was established in 1747 by John and Ann Smith, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named for the long branch of the Raritan River that ran through the town.
In the early 19th century, Long Branch began to develop as a resort town, with several large hotels being built along the shoreline. Among the most famous of these hotels was the Long Branch Hotel, which was built in 1838. The hotel was a popular destination for celebrities and political leaders, and was the site of several important events during the Civil War.
In the late 19th century, Long Branch’s popularity as a resort town declined, and the community began to transition into a residential community. The town’s economy shifted from tourism to fishing and farming, and the population began to grow.
