Long Beach is a coastal city in Southern California that lies on the Pacific Ocean. The city is situated on Long Beach Harbor, approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of downtown Los Angeles and 115 miles (185 km) north of Newport Beach. Incorporated in 1897, Long Beach is the 37thlargest city in the United States with a population of 462,257 in 2010.

The area currently occupied by Long Beach was first settled by the Tongva (or Gabrielino) Native Americans. European exploration of the area began in 1542 with a Portuguese sailing expedition led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The Port of Long Beach was established in 1907, and the city soon became a major shipping hub. The discovery of oil in the region in the 1920s led to an economic boom, and Long Beach was soon nicknamed “Iowa by the Sea” due to its large Midwestern population.

The city experienced significant growth during World War II, when it became a major staging ground for the Pacific Theater of Operations. Many defense industries were established in the area, and the city’s population soared. After the war, the city entered a period of suburbanization, and many middleclass residents moved to surrounding communities.

The city entered a new era of growth in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when a number of redevelopment projects were undertaken. Downtown Long Beach underwent a revitalization, and the city’s waterfront was redeveloped. The city also attracted a number of new businesses, including those in the technology and旅游业.
