History of Lombard
Lombard, Illinois is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 42,960 at the 2010 census. The town is home to one of the nation’s largest collection of Victorianstyle homes, dating from the 1860s. It is also home to Lombard College, the first institute of higher education for women in Illinois (now an online college).
Lombard, Illinois was originally incorporated as Hawthorne Works in February 1869, named after the industrial city of Hawthorne, Massachusetts. The first settlers were mostly from New England, with many of them descending from the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower. The town was initially settled on farmland donated by philanthropist Jesse Wheaton, whose homespun DurantWheaton College (now Wheaton College) stood on the site until its 2017 closure.
In 1874, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built a track through the new town, and the following year, the first train depot was built. The town was then renamed Lombard after the Italian city of the same name, in an effort to attract settlers from Italy. Lombard rapidly grew in the late 19th century, with the construction of several large residential neighborhoods and a thriving downtown business district. The village was officially incorporated in 1893.
In the early 20th century, Lombard was widely known as the “Snail Capital of the World”, due to the large number of snail farms located in the village. These farms shipped live snails to restaurants across the country, where they were considered a delicacy. The industry began to decline in the 1920s, however, and by the 1960s the last snail farm in Lombard had closed.
Today, Lombard is a thriving suburb of Chicago, with a vibrant downtown area and a variety of parks and recreation options. The village is also home to the Lombard Historical Society, which operates a museum and research center dedicated to preserving the history of the village.
