Logan is located at the confluence of the Guyandotte and Mud rivers. The Guyandotte River forms the border between Logan and Chapmanville to the south. Logan was originally settled by Samuel Jackson in 1786. Jackson originally called the town Jackson’s Mill. In 1824, Jackson donated the land for the courthouse and the town was renamed in honor of John Logan, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War. The town of Aracoma was founded in 1869 by Wallen Blaine and James Chapman, and was later annexed by Logan in 1976.

Logan was named for John Logan, an explorer who in 1725 become the first white man to settle in what is now Cabell County, West Virginia. In 1774, Logan led a group of Virginians to the Mouth of Elk (now Huntington) to establish the town of Guyandotte. Six years later, as a captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, he was killed in battle near Fort Henry in presentday Wheeling.
Logan County was established in 1824 from parts of Boone, Kanawha, and Cabell counties. The county seat was initially located at Aracoma, which is now part of Chief Logan State Park. It was later moved to Triadelphia, then toagna, and finally to Logan in 1860.
Logan began to grow in the late 19th century after the arrival of the Norfolk & Western Railway. The city was incorporated in 1907.
