History of Lockport

Lockport is a city in New York State, United States. The population was 21,165 at the 2010 census. The name of the city (and county) comes from the Erie Canal’s original eastern terminus at the Erie Canal Lock in Lockport.

The Erie Canal was completed in 1825 and connected the Great Lakesto the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River. As the population of Western New York grew, the need for a yearround port larger than that of Buffalo (the canal’s west end) increased. So in 1828, construction of a new, longer section of the canal was begun that would bypass Niagara Falls and go through what is now Lockport. The project was not completed until 1832, at which time it was the longest canal in the world at almost 338 miles (544 km) in length.

The Enlarged Erie Canal, as it was then called, opened for business on October 26, 1832. Lockport became an important hub on the canal, and growth in both trade and population soon followed.

The first locks on the Enlarged Erie Canal were built of wood. These were replaced by stone locks in 1838, which in turn were replaced by the current concrete locks in 1918.

The original reason for the locks in Lockport was to overcome a difference in elevation between the Erie Canal and the Niagara River. The river flows south from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and the Niagara Falls are located between the two lakes. The waterfalls create a drop in elevation of about 165 feet (50 m), and the resulting rapids make it impossible to navigate the Niagara River without going around the falls.

The Erie Canal overcomes this problem by using a series of locks to raise and lower boats between the two different elevations. In total, there are eight locks in Lockport, four on the east side of the river and four on the west. The west side locks were damaged by a flood in 1935 and were not repaired until 1949.

The Erie Canal was an important factor in the growth of New York City in the 19th century. New York City was the natural destination for goods coming from the west, and the canal made transportation of those goods much cheaper and easier.

The Enlarged Erie Canal was used until the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959. At that point, most commercial traffic on the canal switched to using the seaway, and the canal fell into disuse. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed interest in the Erie Canal, and it is now used primarily for recreation.

Lockport is also home to the only remaining double lift lock in the United States. A lift lock is a type of lock that uses two chambers, each with its own gate. One chamber is used to raise the boat while the other chamber is used to lower the boat. The double lift lock in Lockport has a lifting capacity of 600 tons (545 metric tons).
