The area around Lock Haven was long inhabited by Native Americans. The first European settlers were English and Irish immigrants who arrived in the late 18th century. The town was laid out in 1833 and incorporated as a borough in 1836. It became the county seat in 1839.
Lock Haven was a major lumber town in the 19th century and was the site of several sawmills and planing mills. The Keating Lumber Company was one of the largest operations in the area, employing over 1,000 men at its peak in the early 20th century. The company’s mill was destroyed by fire in 1911, but the company rebuilt and continued to operate until 1966.
The West Branch Canal, which opened in 1834, provided transportation for lumber and other products downriver to Williamsport and Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railroad also served Lock Haven.
