Litherland is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. The town has a population of 17,409, and is contiguous with its nearneighbour Bootle. It was within the municipal borough of Bootle until 1974 when it became part of the newly formed metropolitan borough of Sefton on Merseyside.
Litherland was originally a small village situated between Liverpool and Ormskirk. The name is derived from the Old English hlidh, meaning “slope”, and land, meaning “land”. In the early 19th century, the population of Litherland grew rapidly due to the growth of the nearby port of Liverpool. The first recorded use of the name Litherland was in 1297.
By the early 20th century, Litherland had become a densely populated urban district with a number of public parks and open spaces. The town was devastated by German bombing during the Liverpool Blitz of World War II, with over 70% of the housing stock being destroyed.

History of Litherland
Litherland is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England. Historically in Lancashire, the town was absorbed into Liverpool in 1912. Litherland was originally an agricultural settlement, and remains primarily residential. It is 4.3 miles (6.9 km) northnortheast of Liverpool city centre, on the eastern side of the Dock Road.
The name is derived from the Old English hlidh, meaning “land on the hill”, and land, meaning “open country”. The earliest recorded use of the name is in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Ledreland. At the time of the Domesday survey, around 1066, the land which was to become Litherland was part of the West Derby hundred.
The land passed through several hands over the centuries, until it came into the possession of the Molyneux family in 1301. The Molyneuxs were a powerful and influential family in the area, and held the land until 1598, when it was sold to Sir Richard Molyneux, 2nd Baronet. It remained in the Molyneux family until the early 19th century.
In 1835, the land was sold to a Mr. Jones, who developed it for housing. A number of streets were laid out, and the first houses were built in 1836. The development of the town continued over the next few decades, and by the early 20th century it had become a prosperous suburb of Liverpool.
