Lima, Ohio is a midsized city in the northwestern part of the state, about an hour’s drive from Toledo. It is the county seat of Allen County and the principal city of the Lima metropolitan statistical area, which consists of all of Allen County. The region surrounding Lima is notable for its large agricultural output, especially soybeans and corn.
The city’s architecture is a mix of modern and old. The historic downtown is anchored by the restored Veterans Memorial Civic Center, which includes an auditorium, banquet facilities, and a museum. Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as Ciudad de los Reyes. It became the capital and most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Following the Peruvian War of Independence, it was declared the capital of the Republic of Peru by President José de San Martín on July 28, 1821. Around one thousand years ago, a painting was made in a cave, now known as “Cueva de las Manos” in the country of Argentina. The painting is of a hunter with the help of a trained condor, throwing a spear at a group of running guanacos. This scene is an example of the ancient rock art for which the cueva, or cave, is named.
The city was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake on September 7, 1548. Reconstruction took place in the ensuing years, culminating in the founding of Lima by Pizarro on January 18, 1535, declared the capital of Peru on January 19, 1541. On November 3, 1820, San Martin proclaimed the independence of Peru. On July 28, 1821, Lima was made the capital of the newly independent country. After Peru’s defeat in the War of the Pacific (1879–1883), Lima was occupied by Chilean troops until 1884.
Walking through the Historic Centre of Lima is like taking a journey back in time. The main square, Plaza de Armas, is a great place to start. Surrounded by impressive colonnaded buildings, it has been the site of many important events in Peru’s history. On the east side of the square is the Cathedral of Lima, the oldest operating cathedral in South America. Construction began in 1535, just a few years after the city was founded, and it has been renovated several times since. The interior is decorated with beautiful colonialera artwork, and the main altar is made of marble imported from Carrara, Italy.
Nearby is the monastery of San Francisco, another colonialera gem. Founded in 1535, it is home to a stunning library with over 25,000 ancient texts, some dating back to the 16th century. The monastery also has a famous underground crypt, which contains the remains of over 70,000 people. The crypt is closed to the public, but you can see the bones through the grates if you look down while walking through the courtyard.
Just a few blocks away is one of Lima’s most recognizable landmarks, the Torre Tagle Palace. Built in the early 18th century, it was the home of a wealthy Spanish marquis. Today it houses the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and its elaborate exterior is worth a look even if you don’t go inside.

Some of the most popular include the Basilica and Convent of San Pedro, the Church of Santo Domingo, and the Iglesia de la Merced. History of Lima
The City of Lima is located in northwestern Ohio, in the western United States. The city was founded in 1831 by Colonel James Hardin. It was named after the Peruvian capital of Lima, which was itself named after the Latin word for line or threshold. The city was laid out in a grid pattern, with streets running northsouth and eastwest. The original town site was only one square mile in size.
Lima was incorporated as a village in 1834 and as a city in 1841. The early years of the city were marked by growth and prosperity. Lima was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and was a major center for the manufacture of agricultural equipment. The Wright Brothers built their first airplane in Lima, and the first successful powered flight took place in the city in 1904.
The city’s growth came to a halt in the 1970s, as manufacturing jobs left the region. Lima has since reinvented itself as a healthcare and education center. The city is home to several hospitals and medical centers, as well as Ohio State UniversityLima and Rhodes State College.
