History of Liberal
The city of Liberal is located in the southwest corner of the state of Kansas in the United States. It is the county seat of Seward County. The city was founded in 1872 and named after the Liberal Party of Kansas. The city is home to a community college, a technical college, and a branch of Wichita State University. The city’s population was 20,525 at the 2010 census.
The first settlers in the area that would become Liberal were drawn to the region by the promise of free land. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed settlers to claim 160 acres (65 hectares) of land if they were willing to live on it and cultivate it for five years. The early settlers were mostly farmers from eastern states such as Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
The railroad arrived in Liberal in 1887, which spurred economic growth. The city became a hub for trade and agriculture in southwest Kansas. Wheat is still the main crop grown in the area, and Liberal is home to the secondlargest grain elevator in the world.
