History of Lexington (Missouri)
The city of Lexington, Missouri was founded in 1822 and was named after the Battle of Lexington in the American Revolutionary War. The city is located in Lafayette County and is the county seat. The population of the city is 4,726 according to the 2010 census.
The first settlers to the Lexington area were French and Spanish. In 1766, the area was claimed by the Spanish as part of the Louisiana Territory. The first permanent settlement was established in 1822 by Colonel William Meyers. The town was officially platted in 1824.
Lexington was originally a frontier town and was known for its lawlessness. It was frequently raided by Native Americans and was the site of several vigilante murders. In 1829, the town was attacked by a group of Native Americans known as the Little Osage. This attack led to the construction of Fort Lexington, which was completed in 1830.
In 1836, Lexington was officially incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1840s and 1850s due to the California Gold Rush. Many Lexington residents left to join the gold rush, resulting in a decline in the city’s population.
