History of Lewistown (Pennsylvania)
Lewistown is a borough in and the county seat of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The borough, located along the Juniata River, is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The population was 5,637 at the 2010 census. It is home to several schools, including the prestigious Kiski School.
In 1756, Samuel Lewis, an English immigrant, established the first permanent settlement in Mifflin County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. He constructed a log cabin near the present site of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The cabin served as a tavern and inn, which helped the area become settled by other English and ScotchIrish immigrants.
Lewistown was laid out in 1784 and became the county seat of Mifflin County when it was formed in 1789. The borough incorporated in 1814.
The Juniata River provided power for early industry. The first recorded plan of the town was made in 1806. It shows fiftysix lotstek along Market Street and thirtytwo along Water Street. By 1833, the population had reached 1,502.
Coal was discovered in the area in 1837, and the first coal mine was opened in 1839. The Lewistown Coal Company was incorporated in 1854 and operated seven mines. The opening of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849 created markets for the coal and promoted the growth of the town.
The borough was home to several manufacturers, including the Lewistown Silk Manufacturing Company, founded in 1870, and the Lewistown National Bank, chartered in 1865. The Standard Steel Car Company was the largest employer in the borough for many years.
The borough’s population peaked at 9,316 in 1940. The population declined as the coal industry went into decline and manufacturing jobs left the area.
The borough has seen some redevelopment in recent years. The Historic Lewistown Courthouse and the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology are located downtown. The Historic Lewistown Farmer’s Market is held on Saturdays from May to October.
Lewistown is located in central Mifflin County at (40.597,77.568). It is surrounded by Derry Township. The Juniata River flows through the center of town, past the courthouse square.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,769 people, 2,387 households, and 1,408 families residing in the borough. The population density was 4,463.8 people per square mile (1,720.3/km2). There were 2,662 housing units at an average density of 2,052.5 per square mile (790.0/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 96.77% White, 0.96% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.54% of the population.
There were 2,387 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were nonfamilies. 35.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.7 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $29,071, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,875 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,577. About 9.8% of families and 11.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.6% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.
