A. Introduction
The city of Laurel is the county seat of Jones County, Mississippi. It is located in the Pine Belt region of the state, about 60 miles south of Jackson, the state capital. Laurel is the largest city in Jones County, with a population of about 18,000 people. The city was founded in 1882 by civil engineer Isaac Newton Van Cleve and named for his wife, Laurel.
