History of Lander
Lander, Wyoming is a city in, and the county seat of, Fremont County. It is the 10th largest city in the state of Wyoming. The city was named for transcontinental explorer Frederick W. Lander by his friend and fellow explorer John C. Fremont. The population was 7,487 at the 2010 census.
Lander is located in central Wyoming, along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River. , Lander is home to Western Wyoming Community College, Central Wyoming College Lander Campus, and the counties’ only high school, Lander Valley High School. The town is also known as the “Gateway to Sinks Canyon”,Wind River Indian Reservation, and the Rocky Mountains.
The first European American settlers established a stagecoach stop along the Oregon Trail in the 1850s. It became a hub for prospectors during the Wyoming Gold Rush in the late 19th century. By 1924, Lander had become the county seat of Fremont County. The city was incorporated in 1966.
