History of Lambourn
Lambourn is a large village and civil parish in the West Berkshire district of Berkshire, England. It is about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Newbury and 14 miles (23 km) west of Reading. The village is on the River Lambourn, a tributary of the River Kennet, and has access to the M4 motorway.
The toponym is derived from the Old English for ‘lamb stream’, in reference to the young sheep that were carried downstream to market. The village was spelled Lamborne in the 13th century and Lamberne in the 14th century.
A Bronze Age burial mound, better known as ‘Lambourn Castle’, is on Hackpen Hill to the southwest of the village. There is evidence of Roman settlement in the form of coins and pottery found in the area.
The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the village as Lanchebernie and records that it consisted of 44 households. The manor was owned by William FitzAnsculf and his undertenants were two thegns, Ralph and Putta. A detailed study of the manorial records from 1244 to 1539 was carried out by Kathleen Kenyon in the 1950s.
Lambourn was part of the hundred of Theale. In 1267 the hundred was valued at £40 and had 27 Knight’s fees attached to it.
By the late 14th century, the village had grown to become a town with a market and two annual fairs. It was bypassed by the main road between Reading and Newbury in 1760, which helped it to retain its country feel.
The river was an important source of power for local industry until the early 20th century. There were corn mills, paper mills, a tannery and other manufacturing businesses operating along its banks.
The Lambourn Valley Railway, opened in 1867, ran through the village and was used to transport goods to and from the Reading to Taunton mainline. The branch line closed in 1960 but the main line is still in use.
The village has a number of historic buildings, including St Mary’s Church, which dates from the 12th century, and Lambourn Manor, a Grade II* listed building.
Lambourn is well known as a training centre for racehorses and has over 50 stables. It is sometimes referred to as ‘the Nadal of the National Hunt world’.
