Lakewood is a township in Ocean County, New Jersey. The township is situated around the manmade lake of the same name. Lakewood was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1892, from portions of Brick Township and Howell Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Point Pleasant Beach (June 15, 1886), Brick Township (April 15, 1850), Manchester Township (April 6, 1865) and Jackson Township (March 6, 1844). The township is one of the largest in Ocean County in terms of square mileage.
The township has a diverse religious makeup. Lakewood is home to Seven Wells, the first natural water source in the area. The township also contains two manmade lakes: Lake Carasaljo and Shadow Lake.
The township’s trustees are elected atlarge in partisanship elections to serve staggered threeyear terms of office on a board of five trustees, with either one or two trustees up for election each year as part of the November general election in evennumbered years. History of Lakewood (New Jersey)
The township of Lakewood was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 23, 1892, from portions of Brick Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Point Pleasant Beach borough (January 15, 1886), Bay Head borough (April 15, 1886), Lavallette borough (May 8, 1887) and Seaside Heights borough (February 26, 1913). The township was named for its lakes, specifically Cedar, Apaquogue and Mogues.
The earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenape, a Native American people who lived in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The Lenape were organized into three main divisions: the Unami, or Turtle clan, which occupied presentday Burlington County and Ocean County; the Munsee, or Wolf clan, which inhabited much of presentday Sussex County and Warren County; and the Unalachtigo, or Turkey clan, which lived in presentday Salem County and Gloucester County.
The first European settlers in the area were Dutch farmers who arrived in the 1630s in search of land to farm. They purchased land from the Lenape and began clearing it for farms. In 1664, the English seized the area from the Dutch and established the colony of New Jersey. Within a few years, English settlers began arriving in the area, also in search of land to farm.
