History of Lakeland

The city of Lakeland, Florida, was founded in 1885 by abutting landowners on the shores of Lake Wire. The site was selected because of the area’s high water table and sandy soil, which were thought to be conducive to farming. The city’s name was chosen because of the many lakes in the area.

Lakeland was incorporated as a town in 1901 and as a city in 1925. The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century due in part to the establishment of the headquarters of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1900. Al Capone was a frequent visitor to Lakeland during the Prohibition era, and his niece grew up in the city.
