History of Lake Forest

Prior to EuroAmerican settlement, the area was home to the Potawatomi tribe. The first known nonindigenous permanent resident was a trader named Billy Caldwell, who settled here in 1817. In October 1859, the first ever public land sale was conducted in the area, followed by the first schoolhouse opening in 1862.

The formal establishment of the city of Lake Forest occurred in 1857 when a group of wealthy Chicago businessmen purchased a large parcel of land on the shore of Lake Michigan with the intention of creating a private hunting club. However, the plans for the club never came to fruition and, in 1861, the property was divided up and sold to individuals who were interested in establishing a residential community.

The Civil War put a temporary halt to the city’s growth but, afterwards, it experienced a population boom. In 1874, the first public beach was opened and, two years later, the first railroad line came through. The city continued to grow steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, Lake Forest is home to just over 19,000 people. It is a thriving community with a strong sense of history and tradition. The city is home to several prestigious colleges and universities, as well as a number of corporate headquarters, making it a very desirable place to live.
