Laconia is a city located in Belknap County in the state of New Hampshire, United States. The population was 15,951 at the 2010 census. Laconia, situated between Lake Winnipesaukee and Winnisquam Lake, includes the villages of Lakeport and Weirs Beach. The city is also home to the annual Laconia Motorcycle Week, the oldest motorcycle rally in the United States.
The city was named after the Greek island of Laconia (Λακωνία), famous in Greek mythology as the site of the battle between Achilles and Penthesilea during the Trojan War. The word “laconic” (λακωνικός) originates from Laconia and its inhabitants’ reputation for laconic (uncommunicative) speech.
Laconia was originally part of Meredith, which was incorporated in 1748. Laconia was separated from Meredith and incorporated as a town on March 1, 1855. It was named after the ancient Greek region of Laconia, of which the city is a modern counterpart.
The town became a city on January 13, 1893.
The city is served by two newspapers: The Laconia Daily Sun and The Citizen of Laconia.
Laconia is located at the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire. Lakes Region General Hospital is located in Laconia.

History of Laconia
Laconia is a city located in the central part of New Hampshire, United States. The population was 15,951 at the 2010 census and an estimated 16,470 as of 2019. Laconia is the county seat of Belknap County. The city is also home to the University of New Hampshire at Laconia and Lakes Region Community College.
The city takes its name from the ancient Greek citystate of Sparta, of which Laconia was a part. A group of settlers from Laconia, led by Colonel John Gilman, arrived in the area in 1763 and purchased the vacant land along the Winnipesaukee River. The town was officially incorporated in 1770. The industrial revolution brought new opportunities to the city, and by the early 1900s, Laconia was home to several paper mills and factories. The city’s economy remained strong even after the Great Depression, and in the postwar years, Laconia became a popular tourist destination, known for its many lakes and resorts. Today, Laconia is a bustling city with a vibrant downtown and a growing population.
