History of La Salle

La Salle was founded in 1679 by Robert Cavelier de La Salle, a French explorer. He named the city after himself. La Salle was the first European settlement in Illinois and the first permanent settlement in the Midwest. The city grew slowly at first, but eventually became a thriving river port. La Salle was an important stop on the French Fur Trade Route and was also a stopping point for settlers headed west. The city was annexed by the United States in 1803 and became part of the Indiana Territory. La Salle remained a small town until the early 1840s when the Illinois and Michigan Canal was built. The canal turned La Salle into a major shipping center and the city began to grow rapidly. La Salle continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city’s population peaked in 1960 at over 28,000 people. Today, La Salle is a small city with a population of just over 9,000 people.
