Kokomo is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the county seat of Howard County. It is the principal city of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Howard County. Kokomo’s population was 46,113 at the 2010 census. Named for the Miami tribe, Kokomo first benefitted from the opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal. Later, industry followed with the founding of CocaCola Bottling Works in 1900, Western Stove Works in 1903, and the American Strawboard Company in 1904.
As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 46,113. The Kokomo, Indiana metropolitan statistical area had a population of 106,714.

The racial makeup of the city was 75.96% White, 20.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.03% of the population.
There were 18,159 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were nonfamilies. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.

History of Kokomo
Kokomo, Indiana, began as a small settlement in 1824 along the Wildcat Creek. The town was first known as the “Hub City” because of its location at the convergence of several Native American trails. In 1844, the town’s name was officially changed to Kokomo.
Kokomo experienced slow but steady growth throughout the late 19th century. The Wabash and Erie Canal, which opened in 1843, brought increased trade and commerce to the town. The arrival of the railroad in 1854 further boosted Kokomo’s economy.
The city reached its largest population of around 17,000 residents by 1900. During this time, Kokomo became known for its manufacturing industries, which produced products such as automobiles, glass, and steel.
The Great Depression and World War II both took a toll on Kokomo’s economy. However, the city later rebounded and flourished in the postwar years. Today, Kokomo is home to around 45,000 people and is a major manufacturing center in the United States.
