History of Knoxville
The city of Knoxville, Tennessee, was founded in 1786. The city was named after Major General Henry Knox, who was the American Continental Army’s chief artillery officer during the Revolutionary War. Knoxville is the county seat of Knox County.
Knoxville was the first capital of Tennessee from 1796 to 1819. The city’s strategic location at the confluence of the Tennessee and French Broad Rivers made it a target for both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Knoxville was occupied by Union troops from 1862 until the end of the war in 1865.
