History of Klamath Falls
The earliestknown peoples to occupy the area now known as Klamath Falls were the Modoc and Klamath peoples, who shared ancestors with the Pit River peoples of California. These peoples traded with each other and lived in relative harmony for several generations.
The first western settlers to the area were trappers and fur traders, who arrived in the early 1800s. The first permanent settlers did not arrive until the mid1860s, when a group of homesteaders from the Midwest came to the area.
The town that would eventually become Klamath Falls was incorporated in 1893. It was originally called Linkville, after one of the settlers. The name was later changed to Klamath Falls, after the nearby falls on the Klamath River.
The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century, due in part to the construction of the Klamath Reclamation Project, which brought irrigation water to the area. The project was completed in 1907, and Klamath Falls soon became the center of an extensive agricultural region.
The city continued to grow in the decades that followed. The completion of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in 1993 brought new attention to the city’s history, and Klamath Falls has since become a popular destination for tourists.
