History of Kittery

The first European settlement in presentday Kittery was established in 1623, when Arthur Benzie and James Wall built a trading post along the Great Bay Estuary. The town was part of the proprietary colony of New Hampshire until 1641, when it became part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1647, the town was renamed Kittery when it was incorporated.

The town grew rapidly in the early years of the 18th century as a result of the establishment of Fort Wentworth, which was the first permanent British settlement in presentday Maine. A sawmill and gristmill were built on the falls of the Kittery River, and the town became a shipping center for lumber and masts.

The American Revolution brought changes to Kittery. Fort Wentworth was captured by the Americans in 1775, and renamed Fort Wilson in honor of Continental Army General James Wilson. The town was also the site of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which was established in 1800.

Kittery was incorporated as a city in 1822. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard remains an important part of the city’s economy, and is the largest employer.Tourism is also an important industry, with the town’s proximity to rye New Hampshire and the worldrenowned Kittery Outlets, which feature over 100 brandname outlet stores.
