The town had a population of 11,767 at the 2011 Census.

Kippax is thought to date back to the 7th century when an Anglian settlement was founded here. The name Kippax is thought to derive from the old English ‘cyppe’ meaning a small hill or knoll. It is believed that Kippax grew up around a small hillock which no longer exists and that the village expanded downhill from this point.
The first mention of Kippax in the historical record dates from 1086 when it was listed in the Domesday Book as belonging to the Archbishop of York. At this time, Kippax had a population of around 100 people and was a relatively prosperous village with a mill and a church.
During the medieval period, Kippax prospered and grew in size. By the early 14th century it had a population of around 500 and was large enough to be granted a market charter. The market was held every Wednesday and was a lively affair, with stalls selling everything from vegetables and livestock to cloth and pottery.
The market continued to be held until the early 19th century when it was finally discontinued. However, Kippax remained a prosperous and thriving village throughout the medieval and early modern periods.
Today, Kippax is a small town with a population of around 5,000 people. It retains its village feel, with a number of traditional pubs and shops, and is a popular place to live.
