History of Kingsport

The city of Kingsport is located in the northwestern corner of the state of Tennessee in the United States. It is situated along the banks of the South Fork Holston River at the confluence of the North Fork Holston River. The city has a population of approximately 50,000 people and is a part of the Kingsport–Bristol–Bristol metropolitan area, which is the 35th largest in the nation with a population of just over 500,000 people.

The area now known as Kingsport was originally settled by EuroAmerican pioneers in the 1770s. The town was originally known as “King’s Port” because it served as a port of entry for settlers to the region. The town was renamed “Kingsport” in 1917.

The city of Kingsport was founded in 1881 by Swissborn John Netherland Heiskell (1844–1914), who established a woolen mill and planned the Town of Kingsport. The city was originally named “King’s Millport” but was renamed “Kingsport” when it was incorporated in 1917.

During the early 1920s, Kingsport was selected as the site for a new Procter & Gamble (P&G) detergent plant. This plant, which opened in 1924, brought new jobs and growth to the city. The community continued to grow throughout the 20th century, becoming an important industrial center in the region.

Today, Kingsport is known as the “City of Progress” and is a thriving community. The city’s public school system is ranked among the best in the state, and the city is home to several higher education institutions, including East Tennessee State University’s Kingsport campus.
