Sights in Kingsbridge
Kingsbridge is a small town located in the county of Devon, England. The town is situated on the River Avon, about 9 miles (14 km) south of the city of Plymouth. Kingsbridge is known for its Norman church, which was built in the 12th century, and its 16thcentury bridge over the River Avon. The town also has a number of old buildings, including the Grade I listed St. Michael’s Hospital, which was founded in the 12th century.
History of Kingsbridge
Kingsbridge is a town and civil parish in the South Hams district of Devon, England. It lies on the central estuary of the River Avon, with the smaller rivers Corn and Dodbrook flowing into the same estuary. Kingsbridge is about 14 miles (23 km) south of Dartmouth and 31 miles (50 km) southwest of Exeter.
The town’s two main centres are on either side of the estuary: the original settlement on the east bank and Kingsbridge itself on the west. The estuary becomes a creek which can be crossed by foot at low tide, though a boat service also operates. Kingsbridge is the third largest town in the South Hams after Ivybridge and Totnes.
The market town of Kingsbridge was founded by the Saxons. It was originally known as Cyningesbrycge, meaning “King’s Bridge”. The town was granted a royal charter by King John in 1219. The estuary was an important crossing point for the River Dart, and the town became a prosperous trading centre.
During the 14th century, the town was the southern terminus of the SaintGervais–Kingsbridge pilgrimage route to the shrine of St James at Compostela in Spain. Many pilgrims passed through Kingsbridge on their way to or from Dartmouth, where they embarked on ships bound for Spain.
The town was ravaged by French and Spanish forces during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1333, it was burned by Rickard III de Bury, and in 1512 it was sacked by a French force under Louis XII.
Kingsbridge Prison was established in the town in the 18th century. It was used to house French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars. The prison was closed in 1835.
The town’s market is still held every Wednesday. Kingsbridge Fair, a charter fair, is held every October.
The Church of Holy Trinity dates from the 15th century and is Grade I listed. The tower houses a ring of eight bells, all of which were cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1901.
