History of Killeen
The city of Killeen, Texas is located in Central Texas, about 60 miles southwest of Austin and approximately halfway between Waco and Fort Hood. It is the county seat of Bell County and is considered part of the KilleenTempleFort Hood metropolitan statistical area. The city’s population was 136,021 at the 2010 census and the estimated population in 2018 was 149,305.
The area now known as Killeen was originally home to the Tonkawa tribe, who lived in the area until they were displaced by the Comanche in the mid18th century. The Comanche also used the area as a hunting ground and travel route. In 1836, the Texas Revolution resulted in the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Bell County was established the following year, with the town of Belton serving as the county seat.
In 1867, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway extended its line through central Texas and chose a site for a new station near the center of Bell County. The town that grew up around the railroad station was named after Frank P. Killeen, the general superintendent of the railway. The city of Killeen was officially incorporated in January 1905.
During World War II, Fort Hood was established east of Killeen. The influx of soldiers and their families significantly increased the city’s population. After the war, many of the soldiers who had trained at Fort Hood chose to settle in Killeen. The city continued to grow throughout the second half of the 20th century, as more families moved to Killeen and the adjacent city of Temple due to the presence of Fort Hood.
On November 5, 2009, Fort Hood was the site of a mass shooting in which 13 people were killed and 32 others were injured. The shooting, which was carried out by a U.S. Army major, occurred at amilitary readiness center on the Fort Hood campus.
