History of Kilgore
Kilgore is a city in Gregg and Rusk Counties in the eastern part of Texas, United States. The population was 12,975 at the 2010 census. Kilgore was the childhood home of actress Barbara Eden. It is the site of the East Texas Oil Museum and the Euronext Kilgore oilfield.
The area around Kilgore was first settled by farmers in the early 1840s. By 1845, a community called White Oak Point had emerged. In 1850, the settlers decided to name their community after James Kilgore, an early settler. The town was originally located about a mile east of its current location. In 1856, the state legislature chartered a school district in Kilgore. The first school was a oneroom log cabin.
In 1866, Kilgore was hit by a major fire which destroyed most of the downtown area. The town was rebuilt and continued to grow. In 1879, the Houston and Texas Central Railway reached Kilgore, making it easier for people to get to the town. This led to an influx of new residents and businesses.
The first oil well in Kilgore was drilled in 1930. The city became known as the “Oil Capital of the World” after over 1,000 oil wells were operating in the area. The East Texas oilfield is the largest oilfield in the United States.
During World War II, an Army Air Force base was built just outside Kilgore. The base was used for training pilots for bomber crews. After the war, the base was closed and the land was sold to private investors.
