History of Keyser

The town of Keyser is in Mineral County, West Virginia. The county seat is Keyser, and the county was founded in 1866. The town was named for George Keyser, who owned the land on which the town was built. George Keyser was a German immigrant who came to America in the early 1800s. He settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and later moved to what is now western Maryland. He bought large tracts of land in the area and developed them into farms. He also built a gristmill and a sawmill on his property. Keyser became a thriving community, with a post office, a school, and a church. In 1866, the Virginia General Assembly passed a law creating Mineral County from parts of Hampshire and Hardy counties. The county was named for the minerals found in its mountains, including coal, iron, and gold. Keyser was named the county seat. George Keyser donated land for the county courthouse and for a public park. The town continue to grow and prosper, and today it is a thriving community with a population of about 5,000.
