History of Key West
The first known Europeans to visit the island were the Spanish in 1522. Juan Ponce de León, who led the first European expedition to Florida, claimed the island for Spain. He named it San Cristobal after Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers.
The island was later settled by the Spanish and became a base for pirates and privateers. In 1815, the pirate captain José Gaspar raided the town of Key West, plundering and burning much of it.
In 1822, the United States took control of Florida from Spain, and in 1823 John Warren was sent to Key West to survey the island. He laid out a plan for the town, which was approved by the Florida Territorial Legislature.
The first settlers arrived in 1825, and Key West quickly became a thriving town. It was incorporated as a city in 1828.
Fort Zachary Taylor was built in the 1850s to defend the city against pirates and foreign invaders. It was also used as a base during the Civil War and the SpanishAmerican War.
Today, Key West is a popular tourist destination known for its sunny weather, beaches, and laidback atmosphere.
