Sights in Kettering

History of Kettering

Kettering is a city in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 56,163 at the 2010 census. It is the largest suburb of Dayton.

Kettering was originally settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Pennsylvania and Virginia. The town was named after Matthias Kettering, who settled in the area in 1841. Matthias Kettering was a retired Lutheran minister. In 1848, Kettering was officially incorporated as a village.

The Wright brothers, who are credited with inventing the airplane, lived in Kettering for a time and operated a bicycle shop there. Orville Wright was born in Kettering in 1871.

The Kettering Health Network, a large healthcare system, is headquartered in Kettering. So is the Dayton Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in Ohio.

Kettering is home to a number of parks and recreation facilities, including Fraze Pavilion, a popular outdoor concert venue. The city also has a highly regarded public school system.
