History of Kansas City (Kansas)
Kansas City, Kansas, is a city in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. It is the councilmanaged city in Wyandotte County and the fifthlargest city in the state of Kansas with a population of 145,786 people at the 2010 census.
Kansas City, Kansas, is named after the nearby Kansas River, which in turn was named after the Kansa Native American tribe, which inhabited the area. The tribe’s name (natively kkǎ:ze) is often said to mean “people of the (south) wind” or “people of the south wind.” However, this was probably a misinterpretation by what were then called theDhegiha Sioux, who had migrated to the area from the north and east. The actual name seems to have been Angkita, lit. “Water people”.
The city was founded in 1838 as the “Town of Kansas” and was incorporated in its present form in 1857.
During the American Civil War, on August 21, 1863, the Battle of Byram’s Ford was fought here. Confederate General Sterling Price was turned back while attempting to invade Missouri. The city is situated at Kaw Point, which is the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers.
In October 1864, Union Major General William S. Rosecrans evacuated Kansas City, Missouri, in face of Sterling Price’s invading Confederate Army of Missouri, sending all Union troops and any civilians who desired under his protection over to Kansas City, Kansas. Price destroyed nearly 20% of the city during his brief siege, although the Union forces did manage to repulse his advance. This was one of the last conflicts of the American Civil War.

In the 1950s, African American entrepreneur J.L. Wilkinson created the Negro Baseball League’s Kansas City Monarchs, which became one of the most successful black baseball teams of the era.
In the late 20th century, Kansas City underwent a significant renewal, spearheaded by the construction of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Today, the city is known for its excellent barbecue, its vibrant arts scene, and its fountains.
