Kaneohe is a city located on the island of Oahu in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The city is located in the Koʻolaupoko District on the windward side of the island at 21° 29′ 24″ N, 157° 45′ 17″ W. Kaneohe is the largest of several communities along Kaneohe Bay and one of the two largest residential communities on the windward side of Oahu. The city occupies much of the narrow northeastern shore of the bay. Kaneohe Bay is one of the largest sheltered deep water harbours in Hawaii.
The main roads through Kaneohe are Kamehameha Highway ( State Rte. 83), which connects Kaneohe with Pearl City, Aiea, and Waipahu on the Ewa Plain and Pali Highway ( State Rte. 61) which connects Kaneohe with downtown Honolulu. He`eia State Park occupies the narrowest part of Kaneohe Bay between Makapuʻu Point and Kaʻena Point.

History of Kaneohe
Kaneohe is located on the windward side of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. The city has a population of 34,000 people and is the primary access point to the Island of Lanai. The Kaneohe Bay is the largest sheltered body of water in Hawaii and is home to the Mokulua Islands.
The first people to settle in Kaneohe were the Hawaiian aliʻi (chiefs). A chief named Kalaʻihikiola was the first ruler of Kaneohe and built his residence on the shores of Kaneohe Bay. The area became known as Kāneʻohe or “place of the banyan tree” because of the number of banyan trees that grew there.
During the early 19th century, Kaneohe was a thriving agricultural community with sugarcane, rice and taro plantations. In 1845, the first sugar mill on Oahu was built in Kaneohe and the city became known as the “Garden Isle”.
Kaneohe was also home to the Kaneohe Ranch, a large cattle ranch that occupied much of the central windward side of Oahu. The ranch was eventually divided up and sold off in parcels in the early 20th century.
Today, Kaneohe is a suburban community with a mix of residential, commercial and agricultural land use. The city is home to the HEI Power Plant, the Hawaii Army National Guard’s Windward Community College and the headquarters of the United States Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
