Kalispell is a city in and the county seat of Flathead County, Montana, United States.[6] The 2015 census estimates put Kalispell’s population at 21,937.[7] Kalispell is the largest city and commercial center of Northwest Montana. The city of Kalispell was founded in 1891 by Congregationalist minister Cornelius Geary and businessman Jacob Adams Hill after Geary sold his Presbyterian church in Missoula.Geary stayed in the area when he heard there were natural warm springs, which attracted people suffering from health problems. He opened a lodge called The Meadows, which became a popular resort because of its natural hot springs.[14] The museum at Central School in 2010 displayed pictures and artifacts of early Kalispell history.

The name Kalispell is a Salish word meaning “flat land above the lake”.

The area around Kalispell was originally inhabited by the Flathead Indians, and the first white settlers did not arrive until the 1860s. The city was officially founded in 1874, and was named after the nearby Flathead Lake. The City of Kalispell was incorporated in 1884.

The city was a major stop on the Great Northern Railway, and later became the headquarters for Northwest Airlines.
