Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is a city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States, about 50 miles (80 km) east of Pittsburgh. The population was 20,978 at the 2010 census and estimated at 20,402 in 2019. It is the principal city of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Cambria County. Johns Town was laid out in 1770 by its founder, Joseph Johns, and officially incorporated as a borough on January 13, 1800. It was named after Johns, who had worked in Baltimore as an agent of George Croghan. There he had become acquainted with Benjamin Franklin, who was then Postmaster General.
The Great Flood of 1889 occurred on May 31 and June 1, 1889, resulting from the failure of the South Fork Dam on the Little Conemaugh River 14 miles (22 km) upstream from the city. An estimated 2,209 people died in the resulting flood and fire that swept through the valley, making it one of the deadliest disasters in United States history.
Johnstown is home to the first of the first three Americaneni Johnstown Inclined Planes, built in 1854. The planes were a way to get up and down the steep hillside that Johnstown is built on. The planes are still in operation today, carrying passengers and cars up and down the hill.
