Just an hour outside of Austin, Johnson City is the definition of small town Texas. But, don’t let its size fool you, because this town has a lot to offer visitors, from its rich German heritage to its charming Main Street lined with shops and restaurants.
Start your visit by strolling down Main Street to get a feel for the town. Be sure to pop into Love Creek Orchards and Winery for a tour and tasting, and pick up some local honey at Blossoms and Bees. For lunch, try the German fare at Hildebrandt’s Restaurant or the Texas BBQ at Pecan Street Brewing Company.
After lunch, take a walk through the Historic Blanco County Courthouse and grounds. The courthouse, built in 1889, is an excellent example of Second Empirestyle architecture. Then, learn about the town’s German heritage at the Johnson City historical Museum. The museum is housed in the old International & Great Northern Railroad depot, built in 1910.

Johnson City is a city in Blanco and Blanco counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,697 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Blanco County.
The city is named for Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th President of the United States, who was born in Stonewall, Texas, located approximately 12 miles (19 km) west of Johnson City.
Johnson City was the hometown of President Johnson from his birth in 1908 until he left for college in 1927. The town was founded in 1879 by James Polk Johnson, a cousin of Lyndon Johnson, who named the town after himself. The city initially served as the county seat of Blanco County, but lost that status to nearby Blanco in 1890.
The city has a public library, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Library, which is part of the Central Texas Library System.

Johnson City is located in south central Blanco County at 30°16′32″N 98°36′46″W / 30.27556°N 98.61278°W / 30.27556; 98.61278, at the confluence of the Pedernales River and Honey Creek. Texas State Highway 71 passes through the center of the city, leading east 12 miles (19 km) to Marble Falls and west 35 miles (56 km) to Kerrville. Texas State Highway 29 crosses Highway 71 in the center of Johnson City, leading north 28 miles (45 km) to Llano and south 48 miles (77 km) to Fredericksburg.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Johnson City has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2), of which 0.02 square miles (0.04 km2), or 0.97%, are water.
Johnson City is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area.
As of the census of 2000, 1,191 people, 472 households, and 318 families were residing in the city. The population density was 1,405.2 people per square mile (543.4/km²). The 549 housing units averaged 651.8 per square mile (251.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 86.52% White, 3.79% African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 6.47% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 15.38% of the population.
Of the 472 households, 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were not families. About 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07.
In Johnson City, the population was distributed as 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,094, and for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,496. About 11.3% of families and 17.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.4% of those under age 18 and 14.4% of those age 65 or over.
