History of Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe, Oklahoma is a city located in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,188 at the 2010 census, an increase of nearly 200 percent from the 2000 census count of 406. The town was named after Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe.

The area that is now Jim Thorpe was originally settled by the Sac and Fox Indians in the early 1800s. The first white settlers began arriving in the area in the 1840s, and by the early 1850s a community had begun to develop. The community originally went by the name of Wheelock, but in 1892 the name was changed to Jim Thorpe in honor of the famous Olympic athlete.

Thorpe, Oklahoma was officially incorporated as a town in 1900. The town continued to grow throughout the early 1900s, and by 1910 the population had reached nearly 1,000. The town continued to prosper throughout the next few decades, with a peak population of 1,478 reached in 1970.
