History of Janesville

Janesville is a city in southern Wisconsin, United States. It is the county seat and largest city of Rock County, and the principal city of the Janesville, Wisconsin, Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 63,575. The Janesville area was first settled by Europeans in 1835, when pastures were established along the Rock River for their livestock.

The first permanent settlers were Yale and Pamelia Vaughan, who claimed land on the west side of the river. They built a cabin and brought their family and belongings across the river from Beloit. Other settlers soon followed, and Janesville was officially platted as a village in 1836. The city was named for Henry Janes, one of the original settlers. The Wisconsin Territory was created in 1836, and Janesville became the seat of Rock County when the county was established in 1838.
