Situated in the westcentral part of the state, Jacksonville is the county seat of Morgan County. The city is home to just over 19,000 residents and is the principal city of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Morgan County and portions of Cass, Scott and Greene Counties. Founded in 1825, Jacksonville was named for General Andrew Jackson, the future seventh president of the United States. The city is noted for its central role in the development of Illinois’ coal industry in the 19th century, as well as its importance as a shipping center on the Illinois River in the early 20th century.
Today, Jacksonville is home to a number of historical sites and attractions that document the city’s rich past. The West Side Park Historic District, which includes the city’s largest park, features a number of early 20th century era structures, including a bandstand, bathhouse and lagoon. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
The Coleman House, built in 1868, is one of the finest examples of Italianate architecture in the state of Illinois. The house was home to W.S. Coleman, a prominent local businessman, and his family for over 100 years. Today, the house is operated as a bed and breakfast inn.
The Old State Capitol State Historic Site, located in downtown Jacksonville, served as the state capitol from 1839 until 1876 when the state government moved to Springfield. The city is home to Illinois College, MacMurray College, and Lincoln Land Community College. Jacksonville is the primary city of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area which includes all of Morgan and Scott counties.
Jacksonville was established in 1825 on what was then the western border of the state of Illinois. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had served as the first U.S. President from 1829 to 1837.
The first EuropeanAmerican settlers arrived in 1827, and the first two were farmers from Kentucky. By 1829, the population had grown to around 20 families.
In 1832, the city was officially platted and the first city election was held. The city continued to grow and by 1840, the population had reached 1,000.
During the 1840s and 1850s, Jacksonville continued to grow and prosper. The city was home to several colleges and schools, as well as a number of manufacturing businesses.
In 1867, the city was hit by a devastating tornado that killed nearly 200 people and destroyed a large part of the city. The city was rebuilt and continued to grow.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jacksonville became known as a “Health Resort” due to its many mineral springs. The city was also home to the first hospital in Illinois, which was established in 1873.
