It is the principal city of the Greater Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a population of 1,523,615 as of 2018. Located on the St. Johns River in Northeast Florida, 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line, the city was named for General Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and seventh President of the United States.

Jacksonville is a city located in the state of Florida in the United States. The city has a population of approximately 813,000 people and is the largest city in the state of Florida by population. Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval County and is located in the northeastern corner of the state.
The area where Jacksonville is located has been inhabited for thousands of years by various Native American tribes. The first European settlement in the area was established in 1562 by Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles. The settlement was abandoned in 1564 but was reestablished a few years later. The city of Jacksonville was officially founded in 1822.
During the American Civil War, Jacksonville was an important port city for the Confederacy. The city was captured by Union forces in 1862 and remained under Union control for the rest of the war.
