History of Ithaca
The first known inhabitants of the Ithaca area were the Cayuga tribe, who lived in what is now called Mock Beersheba Creek. “Ithaca” is derived from their name for the area. The Cayuga were part of the Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful group of Native American tribes that also included the Seneca, Onondaga, and Mohawk. The Cayuga were allies of the British during the Revolutionary War. After the war, many of the Iroquois tribes were forced to cede their lands in New York to the new United States. The Cayuga were one of the last to give up their land, finally doing so in 1794.
After the Cayuga, the area was settle by Europeans. The first settlers were mostly from New England and upstate New York. Ithaca became an officially recognized village in 1803. It rapidly grew in the 19th century, becoming a city in 1888.
Ithaca has a long association with education. It is home to Cornell University, founded in 1865, and Ithaca College, founded in 1892. These institutions have helped make Ithaca a hub for academic research and a destination for students from around the world.
The city has also been a leader in the burgeoning sustainable food movement. Ithaca is home to many organic farms and restaurants that use locally sourced ingredients.
