History of Ishpeming
Ishpeming is a city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 6,470 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marquette County. The city is adjacent to the southwest corner of Ishpeming Township. Originally a farming community, surface mining of the region’s abundant iron ore transformed Ishpeming into a thriving mining town in the late 19th century. It is home to one of the world’s largest deposits of rock and hematite.
The city’s historical landmarks include the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum, the National Ski Hall of Fame, and the first Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in North America. Ishpeming is also home to several golf courses including the Mountain Flowers course, designed by famed golf course architect William Diddel.
The rather undistinguished looking city of Ishpeming is actually quite rich in history. The city sits atop some of the world’s largest deposits of rock and hematite, which were first mined in the late 1800s and turned the small farming town into a booming mining city. These days, the main draws to Ishpeming are its outdoor recreation opportunities, its status as the home of the National Ski Hall of Fame, and its array of historical landmarks.
The first settlers in the Ishpeming area were Native Americans who lived peacefully amongst the area’s plentiful game and fish. But by the early 1800s, the growing number of European settlers began to put pressure on the resources of the land, and relations between the two groups became strained. In 1853, the government established the Marquette Iron Range as a way to open up the area’s iron deposits for mining. This brought a wave of new settlers to the area, and by 1857 there were enough people living in Ishpeming to incorporate it as a village.
The village rapidly grew into a city as the iron mines boomed. By 1880, Ishpeming’s population had reached nearly 5,000 and there were over two dozen mines in operation in the area. The city continued to grow throughout the early 1900s, with several new mines opening and the population reaching over 8,000 by 1930.
But the Great Depression and ensuingWorld War II took their toll on Ishpeming’s mines, and by the 1950s most of them had closed. The city’s population dropped to just over 6,000, where it has remained fairly steady since.
Despite the decline of its mining industry, Ishpeming has remained a vibrant and historic city. The National Ski Hall of Fame, which honors America’s top skiers and promotes the sport of skiing, has been located in Ishpeming since 1954.
