History of Irvine
before it was officially founded in 1971. The land that would eventually become Irvine was first inhabited by Native Americans who arrived in the area about 2,000 years ago. The first European to set foot in the area was Gaspar de Portolà, a Spanish explorer who came through in 1769 on his way to find Monterey Bay. The area remained largely undeveloped for the next century, until the Read family, Orange County’s first American settlers, arrived in the late 19th century.
The Reads quickly established themselves as successful farmers, growing a variety of crops including grapes, citrus fruits, and grains. Irvine Park, the city’s first public park, was created in 1886 on some of the Read family’s land. In the early 20th century, the Irvine Company began to develop the land for agricultural use, as well as for residential and commercial purposes. The city of Irvine was eventually incorporated in 1971, and has since grown into a thriving metropolis with a diverse population and economy.
