History of Iowa City

Iowa City is the home of the University of Iowa and is located in southeastern Iowa. The city was founded in 1839 by Dr. Samuel M. Hahnemann and incorporated on January 28, 1842. The population of Iowa City was estimated at 87,893 in 2019, making it the fifthlargest city in the state.

The area now known as Iowa City was originally inhabited by the Sauk and Meskwaki Native American tribes. In 1833, the Sauk ceded their land in the Black Hawk Purchase. The Meskwaki continued to live in the area until 1843, when they were relocated to a reservation in Kansas.

The first settlers in Iowa City were primarily from the New England states. They were attracted to the area by the prospect of cheap land and the opportunity to start fresh. The town rapidly grew and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad.

During the American Civil War, Iowa City was a stronghold of support for the Union. The town was also an important supply center for the Union army. In 1868, the University of Iowa was founded in Iowa City. The university has since become a major economic and cultural driver for the city.

Iowa City was severely damaged by floods in 1893 and again in 2008. Despite this, the city has continued to grow and prosper. Today, Iowa City is known for its thriving arts and music scene, its commitment to sustainability, and its diverse and welcoming community.
