History of Interlochen

Interlochen is a small city located in the northwest corner of Lower Michigan. Founded in 1928, the Interlochen Center for the Arts is the oldest summer camp for aspiring young artists in the United States.

The city of Interlochen was founded in 1897 as a resort town by Michigan lumberman Charles Woodruff. Woodruff built a sawmill and a small village near the presentday intersection of M137 and M223. The village, which he named “Interlochen” meaning “between the lakes”, quickly grew as tourists came to enjoy the area’s natural beauty.

In 1928, Woodruff’s son, Joseph, founded the Interlochen Arts Academy, now Interlochen Center for the Arts, on land donated by his father.
