History of Independence (Missouri)
The city of Independence, Missouri was founded on March 29, 1827 bycolonists from Jackson County, Missouri. The name of the city reflects the settlers’ desire for independence from Native American tribes. The city was also the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Independence began as a small settlement located on the Jackson/Lafayette border. After several years of growth, the settlement was designated as the county seat of Jackson County in 1831. By 1834, Independence had a population of almost 1,000 people.
During the 1840s, Independence became an important outfitting point for westwardbound settlers. It was also during this time that Mormon prophet Joseph Smith established his church headquarters in the city.
Today, Independence is home to over 112,000 people and is the birthplace of U.S. President Harry Truman. The city is also home to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum, as well as numerous other historical attractions.
